Authority
zhèng guān · Direct Officer
The star of accepted restraint — rules you consent to, standing you earn by meeting a standard someone else set. It is the most conventionally fortunate star in the system and the one most often over-read, because it only works if you are strong enough to carry it.

What it is
Direct Officer is the element that controls your Day Master at the opposite polarity. Opposite polarities attract, and that attraction is what makes this restraint feel like structure rather than assault. The same elemental control at matching polarity gives Seven Killings; the difference between a career and a siege is one bit of yin-yang.
官 means office in the bureaucratic sense — a post, with duties attached. That is the correct connotation. Direct Officer is not about power you hold but about a position you occupy and the conduct the position requires. In a system that grew up alongside the imperial examinations, this was the star of the scholar who passed and served.
How to spot it
Find the element that controls your Day Master, then take the stem of that element carrying the opposite polarity to you.
| Day Master | Authority is | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 辛 | 木 → 金 |
| 乙 | 庚 | 木 → 金 |
| 丙 | 癸 | 火 → 水 |

Both Officer and Killings present in one chart is 官杀混杂 — mixed authority — and is treated as a defect to be resolved rather than a doubling of good fortune.
In a person
Balanced
Reliable, principled, conscious of how things look and of what is owed. Works well inside institutions and often ends up representing them. There is a real dignity in a well-placed Direct Officer that the plainer descriptions miss.
Too much 太过
Rules become the point. Rigidity, status anxiety, a life organised around external approval, and difficulty acting without permission. Where the Day Master is weak, classical texts stop calling it an Officer at all — 官多为鬼, 'too much office becomes a ghost' — because a post you cannot discharge is just weight.
Too little 不及
Little instinct for structure or reputation. Rules read as arbitrary, hierarchies as noise. This can be genuine independence; it can also be a career of small avoidable collisions with the people who decide things.
Making it work
Direct Officer is the star most often assumed to be self-evidently good. Classically it is conditional on two things — that you can carry it, and that nothing is attacking it.
Configurations that make it work
Wealth generates the Officer
Your Wealth star generates the Officer's element, so resources feed standing. This is the ordinary route by which competence plus means becomes position, and it is why a strong Officer with no Wealth behind it often reads as respectability without leverage.
Officer and Resource generate each other
The Officer generates your Resource star, which generates you: the post confers the education, the standing, the protection, and those in turn make you able to hold the post. This is the classical scholar-official configuration and one of the most stable structures in the system.
A Day Master strong enough to hold office
Not a configuration so much as a prerequisite. The Officer restrains you; if you have no strength, restraint is simply suppression. Assess Day Master strength before you assess whether the Officer is a blessing.
Where it breaks
Hurting Officer meets the Officer
The classical calamity, phrased in the old texts as 为祸百端 — 'trouble in a hundred forms'. The Hurting Officer is named for exactly this: it attacks the Officer's element. Talent that will not submit to the post it holds. It is not automatically ruinous — Resource or Wealth standing between them mediates — but unmediated it is the standard reading for a career derailed by one's own brilliance.
Officer and Killings mixed
Two kinds of authority, incompatible. The chart neither settles into the Officer's order nor commits to the Killings' force.
By pillar
| Year 年 | Inherited standing and early rules — the family's relationship to authority, and yours to the family's. Often reads as an orderly, expectation-heavy upbringing. |
|---|---|
| Month 月 | The Officer structure proper: vocation inside a system. Institutions, professions with credentials, the roles that come with titles. |
| Day 日 | The spouse palace. In a female chart Direct Officer is the classical husband star, and sitting in the Day branch it is read as a conventional, well-matched partnership. Treat the gendered layer with care — the underlying signal is a relationship organised by mutual obligation, which is not a statement about anyone's marital fate. |
| Hour 时 | Late-career standing and children. Recognition that arrives in the second half, and often children who are themselves conventional achievers. |
Commonly misread
Direct Officer is always a good star to have.
Only if the Day Master can carry it. Weak Day Master with heavy Officer is a documented adverse configuration — the classical phrase is that the office becomes a ghost.
It means a government job.
It means functioning inside a structure with defined duties and visible standing. That covers most professional careers, and plenty of self-employment that runs on reputation and compliance.
In a woman's chart it tells you about her husband.
That is the classical convention, developed in a society where a woman's social position ran through marriage. The mechanism it actually describes is the chart's relationship to accepted authority. Reading a modern woman's whole chart through a husband star is a translation error about the era, not about the system.
Officer plus Killings means double authority.
Mixed authority is a defect, not a bonus. Classical practice looks for a way to remove or combine away one of the two.
Where the names come from
官 is an office, so Direct Officer and Proper Officer are both defensible and both in circulation; 正 carries a sense of correct or orthodox as much as direct. Some sources say Righteous Officer, which over-moralises it. ChiAura calls it Authority in the app because a reader who has never met the term needs one word that lands, but Direct Officer is what the literature uses and what people search for.
