Earnings
zhèng cái · Direct Wealth
Wealth you hold because you earned it and keep holding because you tend it. The steady star of the Wealth pair — salary, property, the business that compounds. Its central lesson is the least intuitive thing in the system: more of it does not make you richer.

What it is
Direct Wealth is the element your Day Master controls, at the opposite polarity. You control it, which is the correct image — wealth in this system is not something that arrives, it is something you are strong enough to hold down. Opposite polarity makes the holding stable and consensual; the same-polarity version, Indirect Wealth, is money in motion.
That framing produces the system's most important counterintuitive result. Because Wealth must be controlled, a chart heavy with Wealth and light on Day Master is not a rich chart — it is 财多身弱, wealth crushing its owner. The money is there and the capacity to hold it is not.
How to spot it
Find the element your Day Master controls, then take the stem of that element carrying the opposite polarity to you.
| Day Master | Earnings is | Relation |
|---|---|---|
Wealth is also the star that Resource fears and that Friends compete for, so it is rarely read alone — its verdict depends on Day Master strength and on what else in the chart is reaching for it.
In a person
Balanced
Practical about money, diligent, unshowy, good at maintenance. Direct Wealth people build slowly and are rarely separated from what they have built.
Too much 太过
Wealth as the organising principle: overwork, hoarding, a life measured in holdings. On a weak Day Master, the pattern is worse than mere greed — it is chronic exhaustion in pursuit of something the chart cannot hold.
Too little 不及
Money stays abstract. Income arrives and disperses; assets never quite consolidate. Often paired with real capability in other areas, which is why it reads as frustrating rather than incompetent.
Making it work
Wealth is the star where the surrounding structure matters most, because three different things in a chart all have designs on it.
Configurations that make it work
Strong Day Master, strong Wealth
The base condition. Both sides substantial and in proportion. This — not the sheer quantity of Wealth stars — is what old texts read as a wealthy chart.
Output generates Wealth
Your Output star generates the Wealth element: you make something, and the money is downstream of it. The most durable wealth mechanism in the system, and the one that keeps working when conditions change.
The Officer guards the Wealth
Friends and Rob Wealth compete for your Wealth; the Officer controls them. With an Officer present, the competitors are held off. This is why an Officer plus Wealth configuration is read as protected prosperity rather than two unrelated blessings.
Where it breaks
Friends and Rob Wealth seize the Wealth
Peers, partners and competitors sharing your element all reach for the same Wealth. Without an Officer to restrain them the classical reading is money that arrives and leaves — often through partnerships, siblings, or people you could not say no to.
Wealth heavy, Day Master weak
The signature poverty pattern of a chart that looks rich on paper. Opportunity everywhere and no capacity to hold any of it. Remedied by strengthening the Day Master — Resource or Friends — not by adding more Wealth.
Wealth breaks the Resource
Wealth controls the Resource element. Where a chart depends on Resource for its strength or its structure, heavy Wealth damages the very thing supporting it. The concrete reading is money pursued at the cost of study, health, or the support system that made the money possible.
By pillar
| Year 年 | Family money and early material conditions — what was there before you, and what attitude to it you absorbed. |
|---|---|
| Month 月 | The Direct Wealth structure: steady vocation, accumulation as a life pattern. The classic placement for careers that compound rather than spike. |
| Day 日 | The spouse palace, and in a male chart the classical wife star. Sitting in the Day branch it is read as a stable, materially grounded partnership. The gendered layer is a convention of its era; the mechanism is a relationship organised around shared, tended resources. |
| Hour 时 | Late wealth and children. Assets that mature in the second half, and often children connected to the family's material base. |
Commonly misread
More Wealth stars means more money.
The exact opposite where the Day Master is weak. Wealth must be controlled to be held, and 财多身弱 is a documented poverty pattern. Read Day Master strength first, always.
Direct Wealth means salary and Indirect Wealth means business.
A useful mnemonic that is not a rule. The real distinction is polarity, and what follows is stability versus motion — a salaried job funded by volatile commissions and a steadily compounding business both break the mnemonic.
Wealth is always a good star.
It attacks Resource. In a chart that runs on Resource, heavy Wealth is a liability regardless of how much money it appears to promise.
In a man's chart it is his wife.
Classical convention from a period when a wife was read through the household's material base. The mechanism the star describes is what you hold and maintain — that maps onto a marriage in some charts and onto a portfolio in others.
Where the names come from
财 is wealth, plainly, so the translations cluster: Direct Wealth, Proper Wealth,正财 as against 偏财 Indirect Wealth or Partial Wealth. There is far less naming disagreement here than in the Officer and Output pairs, because nothing about 财 needed softening. ChiAura shows Earnings, one word like the rest of the set, and to keep it distinct from 财星 Wealth, the group it belongs to.
