七杀

Warrior

qī shā · Seven Killings

The star that controls you without softening the blow. Classical texts treat it as the most dangerous thing in a chart and, when it is properly handled, the source of the highest attainment. Both are true, and which one you get depends on one thing: whether something in the chart is holding it.

What it is

Seven Killings is the element that controls your Day Master at the same polarity — yang metal against a yang wood Day Master, yin metal against yin wood. Polarity is the whole story here. When the controlling element carries the opposite polarity you get Direct Officer, and the relationship has a natural give to it: opposites attract, the restraint is negotiated. Same polarity has no such give. Two yang forces meeting is a collision, not a negotiation. That is why the same elemental relationship produces a civil servant in one chart and a soldier in the next.

The name is not poetic licence. Count the Heavenly Stems from your Day Master, calling your own stem one: 甲 is first, 乙 second, 丙 third, and the seventh you land on is 庚 — the stem that attacks 甲. Start from 乙 and the seventh is 辛, which attacks 乙. It works from every Day Master. The star is literally the seventh, and it kills. Most English pages give you the translation without the count; the count is what makes the name stop being arbitrary.

How to spot it

Find the element that controls your Day Master, then take the stem of that element carrying the same polarity as you.

In the branches it appears through the hidden stems, so a chart can carry Seven Killings without a single visible one in the stem row. This matters: a buried Seven Killings behaves differently from an exposed one — it operates as pressure you feel rather than pressure other people can see.

In a person

Balanced

Decisive under pressure, tolerant of risk, quick to act when others are still deliberating. People with well-handled Seven Killings tend to end up where the stakes are real — surgery, litigation, founding companies, command roles. They are not fearless; they are simply less disabled by fear than the people around them.

Too much 太过

Pressure with nothing absorbing it. Chronic urgency, a body that runs on adrenaline until it stops, conflict picked for its own sake, and a habit of creating the crisis that the temperament then knows how to solve. Classical texts phrase this as the Killings turning on their own master.

Too little 不及

Not softness — absence of edge. Nothing forces a decision, so decisions get deferred; nothing raises the stakes, so effort stays comfortable. A chart with no Power star at all often reads as a life with no external structure, which sounds like freedom and lands like drift.

Making it work

This is the part that gets skipped. Almost every English page tells you Seven Killings is 'aggressive energy that can be positive or negative' and stops. The classical position is much more specific: the star is judged entirely by whether the chart contains an agent that handles it, and there are exactly three ways it gets handled.

Configurations that make it work

食神制杀

Eating God controls the Killings

Your Output star controls the element of the Seven Killings — you produce the thing that holds the pressure. The pressure becomes work. This is the classic configuration for people who thrive under deadlines and go flat without them, and it is generally considered the strongest of the three because the restraint is generated by you rather than imposed on you.

印化杀

Resource transforms the Killings

The Killings generate your Resource star, and Resource generates you. The chain converts the attack into support: pressure arrives, becomes learning, and comes back as strength. Charts built this way tend to belong to people who are visibly improved by hard environments. The failure mode is dependence — needing the pressure to feel like anyone at all.

羊刃驾杀

Yang Blade harnesses the Killings

For a yang Day Master, the Rob Wealth star sitting in its peak branch is the Yang Blade — a force as harsh as the Killings themselves. Pairing them lets each absorb the other. The classical image is a blade matched to a general: dangerous separately, functional together. This is the configuration behind charts that read as forceful rather than pressured.

Where it breaks

枭神夺食

Indirect Resource robs the Eating God

If a chart controls its Killings through the Eating God and Indirect Resource then destroys that Eating God, the restraint is gone and the pressure is loose. This is the most common way an apparently well-built chart comes apart.

制杀太过

Over-controlled

Too much Output crushes the Killings entirely. Counterintuitive but classical: with the pressure fully suppressed, the drive it supplied disappears too. The result is capability with no compulsion to use it.

官杀混杂

Officer and Killings mixed

Both polarities of the controlling element present. The chart takes orders from two incompatible authorities — the negotiated restraint and the raw one — and gets neither the status of the first nor the force of the second. Classical remedy is to remove or combine away one of them.

By pillar

Year 年Pressure arriving from before you — family expectation, inherited standards, an early environment that was demanding rather than comfortable. Read it as the climate you formed in, not as an event.
Month 月The strongest placement and the one that defines a structure. Seven Killings holding the Month branch is the Seven Killings structure proper, and the whole chart is then read through whether it is controlled. Vocationally this is where pressure becomes the job.
Day 日The spouse palace. Classically read as a partner who challenges rather than accommodates — and in a female chart, a strong-willed one. Modern practice takes this as relationship temperature rather than fate: the pairing runs on friction, which is generative for some people and corrosive for others.
Hour 时Children, output, and the back half of life. A Seven Killings in the Hour pillar with something to control it is the classical 时上偏官 — one of the configurations old texts marked as a sign of eventual standing.

Commonly misread

Seven Killings is a bad star.

Unhandled it is a liability; handled it is the classical marker of high attainment — 有制则贵, 'controlled, it ennobles'. Judging the star without checking for its controlling agent is the single most common error in English-language readings.

It is just the evil version of Direct Officer.

They are the same elemental relationship at different polarities, and the mechanism differs accordingly. Direct Officer restrains through a relationship you accept; Seven Killings applies force you did not agree to. One is not a degraded copy of the other.

More Eating God to control it is always better.

Over-control is a documented failure state. The goal is a working balance, not the elimination of the Killings.

It predicts violence, enemies or legal trouble.

It denotes pressure and unbuffered control. Whether that shows up as a demanding career, a competitive field, a challenging partner, or a body under stress depends on placement and on what else is in the chart. Literalising it into events is fortune-telling, not chart reading.

Where the names come from

The translations split because translators had to choose between what the star is called and what it does. 七杀 is literal — the seventh stem, and it kills — which gives Seven Killings and Seven Kills. Way Fengshui's Imposing Authority describes the tamed version instead, which is friendlier and hides the mechanism. The star also carries a second Chinese name, 偏官 'Indirect Officer', which pairs it explicitly with Direct Officer and is the name you will meet in structure analysis. All four refer to the same thing; if a source says Imposing Authority and another says Seven Killings, they are not disagreeing about anything.
