Glossary · Ten Gods 十神
Muse
shí shén · Eating God
Output that costs you nothing to produce. The star of skill that feels like appetite — cooking, making, teaching, performing, the things you would do anyway. Its classical importance is larger than its friendly name suggests, because it is also the primary agent that holds Seven Killings in check.

What it is
Eating God is the element your Day Master generates, at the same polarity. You produce it, and it flows out easily because nothing about the polarity resists. This is the gentler of the two Output stars; the opposite-polarity version is Hurting Officer, which produces with far more force and friction.
The name has two justifications and both are worth knowing. It feeds — Output generates Wealth, so the Eating God is the star that puts food on the table by making things. And it eats — specifically, it consumes the Seven Killings, which is why 食神制杀 is one of the most valued configurations in the system. A star named for eating that both feeds you and devours your attacker is not a coincidence of translation.
How to spot it
Find the element your Day Master generates, then take the stem of that element carrying the same polarity as you.
| Day Master | Muse is | Relation |
|---|---|---|
Note the inversion: for the Output pair, same polarity gives the 'direct-flavoured' star (食神) and opposite polarity gives the 'indirect-flavoured' one (伤官). This is the reverse of how polarity maps for Wealth, Power and Resource. Sources that state a single blanket rule for all five pairs get this one wrong.
In a person
Balanced
Productive without strain, sensual, good-humoured, drawn to craft. Eating God people tend to be the ones who actually finish things, because the making is the reward rather than the price of the reward.
Too much 太过
Output with no brake: indulgence, sprawl, projects begun for the pleasure of beginning. Where Output heavily outweighs the Day Master, the classical reading is depletion — you are generating more than you have.
Too little 不及
Little natural outflow. Ideas stay internal, skill stays unexercised, and enjoyment gets postponed. Charts thin on Output often read as capable and unexpressed.
Making it work
Eating God is a benign star with one famous vulnerability and two productive uses.
Configurations that make it work
Eating God generates Wealth
Output generates the Wealth element, so what you make becomes what you earn. This is the cleanest wealth mechanism in the system — not speculation, not inheritance, but income that is downstream of production. A chart with this running usually wants the Day Master strong enough to keep producing.
Eating God controls the Killings
Your Output controls the Seven Killings element. Pressure arrives and gets converted into work. Old texts rate this above the other ways of handling the Killings because the restraint is self-generated: you are not being protected, you are answering.
Where it breaks
The Owl robs the food
Indirect Resource — which carries the alternate name 枭神, the owl — controls the Eating God's element and destroys it. Named vividly because the effect is abrupt: production stops, appetite goes, and if the Eating God had been holding Seven Killings, that restraint is lost at the same moment. This is the single most cited failure involving this star.
Output too heavy
With Output overwhelming the Day Master, generation becomes drain. The chart reads as talent that exhausts its owner.
By pillar
| Year 年 | Early ease, an inherited appetite or craft, a childhood where making things was normal. |
|---|---|
| Month 月 | The Eating God structure: vocation in production. Food, craft, teaching, performance, anything where the output is tangible and the skill compounds. |
| Day 日 | A comfortable spouse palace — the partnership reads as easy rather than negotiated. Classically noted as one of the more contented Day-branch placements. |
| Hour 时 | Children and late-life output. In a female chart the Output star is the classical children star, and in the Hour pillar it is read as productive later years. |
Commonly misread
It is about food and eating.
Food is the image, not the meaning. The mechanism is unforced production. It shows up as appetite for life in general and often, but not necessarily, as literal enjoyment of food.
Eating God is gentle, Hurting Officer is harsh — that's the whole difference.
That is the symptom. The cause is polarity: same polarity means the output flows without resistance, opposite polarity means it is generated against a grain. Everything else follows from that, including why one attacks the Officer and the other does not.
A benign star, so more is better.
Output drains the Day Master. Heavy Output on a weak Day Master is a depletion pattern, not a talent bonus.
Where the names come from
食神 translates literally as Eating God or Food God, which sounds odd in English and has led several sites to replace it — Way Fengshui uses Implicit Talent, pairing it against Explicit Talent for Hurting Officer. That pairing captures the feel and loses the two mechanisms the original name encodes. ChiAura shows Muse in the app for readability; the searchable name is Eating God.
