The most brilliant star in the system and the one classical texts warn about hardest. It is named for what it damages: 伤 means to injure, and what it injures is the Officer — the star of accepted authority. Talent that will not defer.

What it is
Hurting Officer is the element your Day Master generates, at the opposite polarity. Output again, but produced against the grain, which is why it comes out with force, edge and originality rather than ease. The same-polarity version is Eating God, and the two are routinely lumped together as 'creativity' in English writing — which loses the only distinction that matters.
The name is functional. The Hurting Officer's element controls the Direct Officer's element. It does not merely dislike authority; it structurally attacks it. Every warning attached to this star traces back to that one mechanical fact.
How to spot it
Find the element your Day Master generates, then take the stem of that element carrying the opposite polarity to you.

The Output pair inverts the usual polarity-to-name mapping: opposite polarity gives 伤官 here, whereas for Wealth, Power and Resource opposite polarity gives the 正 star. Worth checking any source that claims one uniform rule.

Balanced
Original, articulate, unusually quick to see what is wrong with the accepted version of anything. Where Eating God makes, Hurting Officer makes differently — and can say why. Critics, designers, comedians, reformers, the best teachers.
Too much 太过
Brilliance with no brake. Contempt for procedure, arguments won at the cost of the relationship, a pattern of outgrowing every structure that was helping. The classical phrasing is that it insults its own superiors.
Too little 不及
Conventional output. Competent, unremarkable, and unlikely to be the one who reframes the problem.
Making it work
Classical practice does not treat this star as a defect to be removed. It treats it as high-grade material that requires either a restraint or an outlet — and specifies both.
Configurations that make it work
Hurting Officer paired with Resource
Resource controls the Output element, so learning, discipline and lineage restrain the star without extinguishing it. This is the configuration behind people whose originality is credible because it is trained — the scholar who breaks the rule knowing exactly which rule is being broken.
Hurting Officer generates Wealth
Output generates Wealth, so the force gets a destination: the talent is monetised rather than aimed at authority. Frequently the more workable of the two in modern charts, because it converts the star's energy instead of restraining it.

Hurting Officer meets the Officer
Both present with nothing mediating. Classically 为祸百端 — trouble in a hundred forms. The concrete reading is a career or a marriage broken by the refusal to submit to the structure holding it. Resource or Wealth standing between them changes the verdict substantially, and modern practice checks for that before pronouncing.
Unrestrained
No Resource to restrain it and no Wealth to absorb it. The talent stays real and stays unusable — brilliance that never converts into position or income.

Commonly misread
Hurting Officer is a bad star.
It is the sharpest talent star in the system. The old warnings are about its unrestrained form, and they exist because the star is valuable enough to be worth warning about.
Hurting Officer meeting the Officer is automatic disaster.
Unmediated it is severe. With Resource restraining the Output or Wealth standing between the two, the configuration is workable and sometimes distinguished. Check the mediator before you deliver the verdict.
In a woman's chart it means a failed marriage.
This follows from reading the Officer as 'husband' and the Hurting Officer as 'attacks husband'. It is a mechanical translation of a social arrangement that no longer holds. What the configuration reliably describes is a person who will not subordinate her own expression to a role.
It is the same as Eating God, just stronger.
Different polarity, different mechanism, different consequence — only Hurting Officer attacks the Officer. Strength is not the variable.
Where the names come from
伤官 is transparent in Chinese and awkward in English: Hurting Officer, Injury Officer, Wounding Officer are all attempts at the same literal sense. Way Fengshui's Explicit Talent abandons the literal in favour of the function, paired against Implicit Talent for Eating God — readable, but it deletes the one fact the Chinese name exists to record.
